Capt. Edmond Saffery
Capt. Edmond Saffery was from Upwell, Cambridgeshire, England, he was born on August 29, 1806 and died on November 8, 1874 on the island of Maui, Hawaii at his residence in Ulupalakua. He is buried in a family cemetary located on the property. Captain Saffery arrived in Honolulu in 1839, at the age of 33. He was the captain of the first schooner which brought gold from San Francisco for Mr. E. Forster. He was also a ship captain on one of the many whaling ships that anchored off shore at Olowalu, Maui, were his wifes family resided. On May 23, 1844 he married Kupuna Na'ehu and eleven days later became a naturalized citizen of the Nation of Hawai'i on June 3, 1844. Six years later Kupuna Na'ehu passed away leaving him with his first child Flora Saffery. Currently we have no picture of his first wife available perhaps the family of Flora Saffery may have a picture of her. Capt. Saffery was the owner of a ship named the Honolulu, was a Judge on the island of Maui and editor for one of the Hawaiian Language newspapers.
Tavaiki (Kawa'awa'aiki Na'ehu Alapa'i)
Captain Saffery then married the niece of Kupuna Na'ehu Kawaawaaiki Na'ehu whose other names were Waiki, Kawaaiki Alapa'i-Nui and Waikipoha. She was the grandaughter of the chief Alapa'i-Nui the paramount chief of the island of Hawai'i during the era preceeding Kamehameha the 1st. Tutu Kawaiki was the daughter of Na'ehu who was born in 1798 and died in 1890, his wife was also named Kawaaiki she was born in 1802 at Olowalu Maui. Olowalu was the land area on Maui where the family was granted title to some of their kuleana land holdings. Tutu Kawaiki Na'ehu was born in 1830 and died in Honolulu on June 9, 1900 and was buried in the Catholic cemetary across the street from Straub hospital. Tutu Kawaiki was staying with her daughter Emalia Nellie Ernestburg when she passed away at the age of 70, while holding her grandaughter on her lap Amelia Keonumelani Ernestburg who was 6 years old at the time.

Capt. Edmond Saffery had 15 children all born on the slopes of Maui at Ulupalakua the descendants of Alapa'i-Nui-a-kauaua. The picture to the left is believed to be the daughter of Alapa'i -Nui and the mother of Tavaiki Capt. Saffery's second wife. They were the descendants of Alapa'i through the Puna geneaology line. The chief Puna our 'ohana was a kahu of Kalaniopu'u the paramount chief of Hawai'i before Kamehameha. Capt. Saffery's first wife was Ku-puna named after this Puna the kahu or guardian of Kalaniopu'u. Tavaiki's mother also called Tavaiki was the daughter of Alapa'i, she would have been considered a sister to Kamehameha. Alapa'i took his nephew Ku-Nui'Akea Pai'ea Kualenalena Kamehameha away from his mother and gave him to his wife Ke'aka to raise as their own child. Kamehameha's name at birth was Ku-Nui'Akea and in our household this is what he was called.
